Slice or shred at least half-head of fresh cabbage In small skillet, snip 6 slices bacon into bite-sized pieces, and fry til crispy, leave grease in pan. Meanwhile, pour about 1/4 cup white vinegar onto bacon , and add the same amount of sugar. Stir well til all dissolved. Immediately pour this over your shredded cabbage and toss til all covered with dressing. Can pepper it if you want.
This is Mom’s basic ‘Wilted Lettuce’ dressing, too, for garden lettuce. Just be sure your proportions of vinegar and sugar are equal, and approx equal to the amount of bacon/grease.
Can be served hot or cold, even next day if there is any left!
